Raphel Sylvester McDonald, affectionately known as "Elder Mac," was born on August 12, 1942, to Wellington Van Dervis and Ellorane McDonald in Senior District, Hanover, Jamaica,WI. He was the oldest of his nine siblings: Byron (Nelson) – deceased, Stephen (Guy), Henry (Joe) – deceased, Janet (Sister/Sista'), Calvin (Tony), Winsome (Winnie) – deceased, Derwent (Digby), and Wellington (Willby). He received the nickname "Hudson" for his dignified demeanor, even as a child, earning him the title "Lord Hudson."
Raphel attended Senior Primary School and Cambridge Primary School for his early education, later graduating from Harrison Memorial High School. At the age of 17, he made the life- changing decision to follow the Lord and was baptized. He was a devoted member of the Cambridge SDA Church. During his high school years, Raphel lived with his two brothers, Nelson and Guy, and his uncle, Steve. Their close-knit bond led to them being affectionately known as the "quadruplets."
After high school, Raphel attended West Indies College, now known as Northern Caribbean University in Mandeville, Jamaica. His diverse career included roles as an Educator, Insurance Salesman, Bookkeeper, and Colporteur. This fostered his lifelong love for books and Accounting.
At the age of 28, Raphel moved to Brooklyn, NY, in September 1970, where he lived for over three decades. It was in New York that he met and married the love of his life, Aretha Yvonnie (formerly Wint) McDonald, on July 15, 1973. Their union of over 50 years was a testament to their love and commitment. Together, they had three children: Dorian, Douglas, and Kaye. They were active members of Brooklyn Temple SDA Church and Beulah Temple SDA Church. At Brooklyn Temple, Raphael was ordained as a Deacon and then as an Elder. He dedicated 18 years as a Sabbath School teacher and church treasurer. Following his ordination, he was affectionately known as "Elder Mac."
"Elder Mac" had a deep passion for teaching Bible class, especially on the books of Daniel and Revelation. On any given Sabbath afternoon and some Sundays, he could be found leading Bible studies either at the church or in his home. His favorite phrase while teaching was "Bible Me!" – emphasizing that all answers should come directly from the Word of God. He was also known for his unwavering love for his family and a thirst for knowledge, often encouraging others to do the same with the phrase "Go read a book."
Raphel graduated from Brooklyn College with a bachelor's degree in Accounting. He worked for the New York City Housing Authority for 23 years as an accountant. On September 11, 2001, Raphel McDonald was in the building adjacent to where the planes struck. He bravely endured the chaos of that tragic day, helping to ensure the safety of his colleagues and staff.
Upon retirement, Raphael and Aretha relocated to sunny Florida and joined the Poinciana SDA Church in Poinciana, Florida. "Elder Mac" continued his commitment by teaching Sabbath School, Bible study, and serving on the finance committee. He also found joy in gardening, proudly sharing the fruits and vegetables he grew and grafted. He embodied the biblical principles of stewardship, not just as a treasurer but in his personal life. He consistently gave an offering of the first fruits he harvested to the church.
In 2023, Raphel celebrated his 81st birthday, and he and Aretha marked their 50th wedding anniversary. They joyously celebrated these milestones with their family and church family. He was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren, consistently praying for their safety and spiritual growth. Even during his times of illness in the hospital and rehabilitation, he remained dedicated to leading others to Christ.
